Oh No! Not More of That Fluffy Stuff

Presenter: Best-selling Author, International Speaker and Senior Director with Huron Rich Bluni RN

When we are feeling stressed and burnt out, it’s not because we are lacking an “intellectual skill” or we don’t care enough…quite the contrary! Often we start getting burnt out because we care a lot. But what happens when you aren’t “feeling it” anymore? What if we focused on our stories? Thought about how we “start”? Talked about giving people what they need rather than what we think they need? Does that sound like “Fluffy Stuff”? Good, because it is! After this presentation, you may see that sometimes all of that “Fluffy Stuff” is exactly what you need.

 Innovation Expo!

INNOVATION EXPO!

Come hear about a variety of innovative initiatives your mhca peers are involved in! Each presentation will be 20 minutes long.

Presenters:

  1. Family & Children’s Services: "Bridging the Gap"
Presenters: Gail Lapidus LCSW, President & CEO; Jill Young MHR LADC, Chief Program Officer for Outpatient Mental Health Services; and Krista Lewis MHR LPC, Chief Program Officer for Medical & Crisis Mental Health Services; of Family & Children’s Services
Transitions from inpatient to outpatient care pose substantial obstacles and risks to successful treatment outcomes for children with SED and adults with SMI/COD. Rates of outpatient non-engagement range from 22% to 90%, depending on the population of focus and the non-engagement time period measured. The Bridging the Gap project ameliorates barriers to outpatient engagement, thereby reducing the risk of symptom exacerbation, relapse, hospital readmissions and suicide.

  2. Volunteer Behavioral Health Care System: "No Wrong Door & Same Day Access In Mental Health Care"
Presenter: Phyllis Persinger, President & CEO, of Volunteer Behavioral Health Care System
We believe that immediate, barrier-free access to mental health and substance use care can and should be the norm, not the exception. A shining example of this commitment to accessibility “when and where someone needs it” is Volunteer Behavioral Health’s innovative “No Wrong Door, Same Day Access” model. Learn the latest improvements and updates to the this model based on invaluable feedback from clients and staff. Our goal is not just to showcase the success of the “No Wrong Door, Same Day Access” model, but also to inspire other mental health care providers to adopt a similar approach.

  3. Egyptian Health Department: "Integrated Hub (iHub)"
Presenters: Angie Hampton MS, CEO; and Teresa Pickering, CIO, of Egyptian Health Department
Egyptian Health Department has developed an innovative framework called the iHub that illustrates rural best practices that include screenings for social determinants of health and linkages to high-impact programs and essential services. The iHub consists of two projects called the Integrated Care for Kids (InCK)- a CMS funded project - and the Integrated Care for Adults (InCA)-a State of Illinois Healthcare Transformation Collaborative project. Learn how our focus on social determinants of health and health promotion is improving rural health.

  4. AltaPointe Health: "Partnering With University Medical Systems For Integrated Primary And Behavioral Healthcare"
Presenters: Tuerk Schlesinger MBA, CEO; and Sandra K. Parker MD, VP & Chief Medical Officer; of AltaPointe Health. Dr. Parker is also Professor and Chair, Dept. of Psychiatry - U. of S. Alabama Frederick P. Whiddon Medical School
  5. About 15 years ago, AltaPointe Health became the primary rotation site for the University of South Alabama College of Medicine’s medical student psychiatry clerkship. This grew to AltaPointe Health becoming the functional Department of Psychiatry for the University a few years later. Then AltaPointe took over a FQHC, and now the relationship with the University has come full circle with AltaPointe Health becoming the primary outpatient clinical site for the Department of Family Medicine for the University. Having ready collaboration between primary care physicians and psychiatrists has improved the clinical care throughout our organization.

Creative Deconstruction of Outpatient Behavioral Health

Presenter: HMA’s Managing Director for Behavioral Health Dr. Gina Lasky PhD MAPL

Outpatient therapy is the iconic model for mental health and substance use care with an entire continuum built on this foundation. There are few who question whether it works; yet, individuals and family members seeking care often say they want something different. Behavioral health leaders have an opportunity with policy and funding trends to carefully review and question  foundational assumptions, outpatient model components, human centered design feedback and operational impacts. Now is the time to build the care that we know is meaningful (for individuals  and the workforce), effective and more efficient.
